Italian football club AS Roma announced the sacking of their manager Jose Mourinho on Tuesday. Mourinho’s dismissal was confirmed days after Roma had to concede a 3-1 defeat at the hands of AC Milan in the Serie A. Ninth-placed Roma are currently 22 points behind table-toppers Inter Milan in the Serie A standings. Roma’s contract with the ‘Special One’ was due to expire later this year in June.
Following his sacking, a teary-eyed and visibly distraught Mourinho was seen leaving the club in a car through a crowd of fans present at the training ground.

Jose Mourinho penned a heartfelt note on Instagram. Sharing a video that perfectly encapsulated his stint at Roma, the 60-year-old wrote, “Sudore, sangue, lacrime, allegria, tristezza, amoR, fratelli, storia, cuore, eternità, [Sweat, blood, tears, joy, sadness, love, brothers, history, heart, eternity].”

Jose Mourinho was appointed Roma boss in May 2021. Under Mourinho’s coaching, Roma had won the first-ever UEFA Conference League title in 2022. A year later, Mourinho, who has coached European giants like Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United, guided Roma to the Europa League final. The Italian side had to concede a defeat on penalties in that summit clash at the hands of Spanish club Sevilla.
The ongoing season has not been quite smooth for Roma with the club missing several players due to injury and fitness issues. Roma claimed four points from their last five league matches and were eliminated from the Coppa Italia with a 1-0 defeat to Lazio. Roma will now be managed by their former footballer Daniele De Rossi.
“AS Roma are pleased to confirm that Daniele De Rossi has been appointed as head coach until 30 June 2024. After an 18-year playing career with AS Roma, De Rossi will return home as head coach, with his first game being the club’s upcoming Serie A match against Verona on Saturday evening at the Stadio Olimpico,” the Serie A outfit said in a statement.
In their next fixture, Roma will be hosting Verona in the Serie A on Saturday, January 20.
