Manchester: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that captain Nemanja Vidic has successfully undergone knee surgery and is on course for a return next season.
The Serbian was stretchered off during Manchester United’s Champions League defeat at Basel on December 7, following an awkward collision with Swiss forward Marco Streller.
Sir Alex’s worst fears were confirmed when it was revealed his captain had suffered cruciate ligament damage, though he is remaining upbeat about the situation following successful surgery.
"He had surgery on Wednesday and came through fine," said the United manager.
"They didn't remove anything at all, everything's clear, but it's a cruciate so it'll be next season [before he is fit to play again]."
Meanwhile, there was further good news on the United injury front.
Ferguson confirmed there are a number of players nearing a return, including Brazilian midfielder Anderson.
"Anderson's coming on great, he's showing great progress. He's trained well. We're just monitoring him because he still has to do a lot of work in the gymnasium but he's coming along."
"Fabio Da Silva's not far away, he should be back in maybe 10 days. The centre-backs [Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling] aren't long-term - they should be available in the next week or two."
The injury news wasn’t so good, however, for Michael Owen and Tom Cleverley. The United boss believes the pair are "nowhere near" a return, and sees the loss of Cleverley as a big blow to the team.
"Cleverley's a massive loss," he added.
"He, to my mind, is probably the best midfield player in Britain, potentially. He has fantastic promise so it's a loss to us."
