London: Carlos Tevez's representatives said on Friday the West Ham United striker had agreed personal terms with Premier League champions Manchester United.
Lawyers acting for the 23-year-old Argentina striker's agent Kia Joorabchian said: "We confirm that Carlos Tevez has, with the knowledge and permission of West Ham United Football Club, been in discussions with other clubs."
"Subsequently, personal terms have now been agreed with Manchester United Football Club," added the statement which was widely reported in the British media.
However, West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson said earlier on Friday there was no agreement with his club, without which Tevez remained on the books of the east London team.
Magnusson's statement on West Ham's official website said: "Carlos Tevez is a registered West Ham United player, contracted to the club until June 2010. There is no agreement with West Ham United for Carlos Tevez to leave the club and we expect him to return in time for next season's preparations."
"No decision on his future can be reached without the agreement of West Ham United."
Tevez, a cult hero at West Ham after leading their successful battle against relegation from the Premier League last season, is in Venezuela with the Argentina squad at the Copa America and played against Paraguay on Thursday.
English idol
However, the striker was quoted in British newspapers on Friday saying: "I feel very proud that a club the size of Manchester United wants me."

"For me Manchester United will be a sensational destination and to be a member of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad will be absolutely spectacular. My dream is to be an idol in English football and I can achieve this now. I am a player who thrives on challenges."
Joorabchian's lawyers added: "Carlos Tevez's representatives will work during the course of next week so that a move to Manchester United can be finalised as quickly as possible. "The process for finalising the player's registration with Manchester United will be undertaken in accordance with appropriate procedures."
Tevez joined West Ham last August with fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano who subsequently moved to Liverpool.
However, the complex transfers breached Premier League rules which subsequently cost West Ham a 5.5 million pounds ($11.06 million) fine although the club were not docked any points.
On Friday a Premier League spokesman said: "As far as we are concerned any deal to take Carlos Tevez away from West Ham has to be done directly with the club (West Ham)."
