Nehru Cup: India go down to Syria in goal feast
India's winning run at the Nehru Cup came to a grinding halt.

New Delhi: Following a jump in the latest FIFA world rankings, India's winning run at the Nehru Cup came to an inopportune halt as they lost to Syria 2-3 in the Capital on Thursday.

Syria are ranked almost 40 places above India in the FIFA rankings, but one couldn't have known that at Thursday's Nehru Cup encounter between the two.

India started brilliantly to take the lead with a perfect through ball from Climax Lawrence for Sunil Chhettri to shoot into the far corner in the 12th minute.

Syria though equalised within 10 minutes, Al-Babar heading in a corner. Syria went 2-1 up in the 45th minute, though it looked like an off-side.

Nothing wrong with Syria's third goal though—star player Ziaad Shavo unleashed a 22-yard scorcher.

India didn't give up and in the 80th minute substitute K Ajayan scored a brilliant solo goal—another long range shot—leaving the Syrian goalkeeper with no chance.

India were denied a penalty late in the game, and the score remained 3-2.
