Virgil van Dijk seems to have shared an update about his future at Liverpool following his 100th Premier League appearance at Anfield on August 25. The Dutch centre-back is contracted to stay with the Reds till the next summer. He was expected to sign a contract extension during this transfer window. The Anfield hierarchy, however, is yet to make a decision on this matter. Questions have been raised about Van Dijk’s future at the Merseyside club since former manager Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of last season.
Despite being a key component of the Liverpool back line, Virgil van Dijk does not look quite sure about his future at the club. He was asked about the topic after the Reds convincingly beat Brentford 2-0 at home in the Premier League. According to Van Dijk, he currently wants to put his entire focus on the ongoing campaign instead of planning his future course of action. “I’m very calm. I want to play the best season I can again. I want to be important and stay important for the club this year. Whatever happens next year, we will see. Everything happens for a reason but for now, there have been no changes in my situation,” he told Sky Sports.

Virgil van Dijk also opened up on his bond with Liverpool and said, “There is no reason for me to start thinking for something else. I have a whole season left to play. I am proud that Anfield is my home and it is a special place. As I said before, whatever happens in the future, Anfield is a special place in my heart. Let’s see what the season brings.” As per a report by SportsMole, Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes is seriously evaluating the contract situation of the Dutch defender.
With Virgil van Dijk spearheading the defence, Liverpool have been able to keep clean sheets in their first two Premier League matches so far this season. They kicked off the campaign with an away 2-0 win against Ipswich Town. Van Dijk has so far represented Liverpool in 271 matches across all competitions.
