New Delhi: Though he failed to leave a mark and came on only as a substitute in the 38th minute, Delhi Dynamos' marquee signing and former Juventus legend Alessandro del Piero said he enjoyed the attention he got from the home crowd at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here.
The Dynamos played their first match of the Indian Super League on Tuesday against FC Pune City, which ended in a goalless draw.
For a start, the crowd was disappointed to not see Del Piero's name among the starting eleven, but once he was on the pitch, in the 38th minute in place of Morten Skoubo, the Delhiites welcomed him by chanting his name - something India associates with only cricket stars.
"I enjoyed every bit of the match. The way the fans chanted my name when I entered the field was really very exciting. It was really a very good feeling. I thank all the fans," Del Piero said after the match before boarding the team bus.
"The playing atmosphere was also good with a lot of people turning up. Only thing was that we did not win the match," said the former Italian striker.
Del Piero also added that the team was more disappointed because it couldn't score despite being the better team on the day. "We played very well and completely dominated the match but missed a lot of chances. A goal would have changed the complexion of the match," he said.
"But it was our first match and we have done very well, except that we did not score," he concluded.
