Milan: Inter Milan fired coach Walter Mazzarri on Friday after a run of poor results left the team in ninth place in Serie A.
Inter president Erick Thohir had given Mazzarri his backing on a number of occasions but finally decided to part ways with the 53-year-old coach.
"Inter Milan announces that Walter Mazzarri has been relieved of his duties as first team coach," the club said in a statement. "The club thanks Mazzarri for the commitment, dedication and professionalism with which he led the team in these 17 months."
Roberto Mancini, who spent four years in charge at Inter, is expected to take over for Mazzarri.
Inter have won only two of their past seven league matches and next faces local rival AC Milan.
Mazzarri joined Inter in 2013 from Napoli, which he had just led to second place in Serie A. After steering Inter to fifth and a Europa League berth in his first season, Mazzarri extended his contract by a year until 2016.
It is only the second coaching change in Serie A this season after Rolando Maran replaced the fired Eugenio Corini at Chievo Verona last month.
Mancini's first spell at Inter ended despite winning two Italian Cups and three straight league titles - although one was awarded after Juventus were stripped for match-fixing.
Mancini announced in March 2008 he would step down at the end of that season, but rescinded his decision a day later. However, he was dismissed at the end of the campaign.
