Tottenham are still exploring the options available in the transfer market, with the summer window set to close next week. The north London club is reportedly interested in roping in another defender. According to a recent report by Sport, the Spurs have kept their eyes on Barcelona centre-back Andreas Christensen. The Danish international previously represented Chelsea in the Premier League before joining the Spanish side in 2022.
The Sport report claimed that the newly appointed Barcelona boss Hansi Flick wants to let go of either Christensen or Eric Garcia this summer. The decision has been made as the club wants to reduce the overall wage bill for the sake of financial stability.
Barcelona plan to generate a significant amount of funds by the sale of Christensen so that they can use the money to secure a few more new signings.
As per his current contract, the Danish international is set to stay at the Catalan club till 2026. Flick, however, does not consider him a regular starter. Christensen played as a substitute in the La Liga opener against Valencia where Barcelona claimed a 2-1 victory.
As per some recent media reports, Barcelona may release Christensen for a fee of nearly €25 million. The footballer is well aware of his club’s intention. He will consider leaving Barcelona only if there is a “top-level project” on the table, claims a report by Barca Universal.
Several clubs, including a Saudi Pro League outfit, have already shown their interest in Christensen. The offer from Al-Ittihad may seem viable to Barcelona but Christensen is unlikely to part ways with European football at the age of just 28.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United were also believed to be keen on landing Christensen. It is, however, difficult for the Premier League side to offer a promising bid, given their financial fair play challenges. As per Goal, Christensen’s agent, who has vast experience in the Premier League market, has been approached by some other English clubs.
Christensen shifted his base to Barcelona on a free transfer. He had joined Chelsea in 2012 as a 16-year-old. He was promoted to first team two years later. Christensen spent two seasons at Borussia Dortmund on loan before rejoining Chelsea again. He won the Champions League trophy with the Blues in 2021.
