Manchester: Veteran midfielder Paul Scholes scored on his 700th appearance for Manchester United and both Alexander Buttner and Nick Powell grabbed debut goals in a 4-0 victory over Wigan Atheltic in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Chicharito had a fourth minute penalty saved by Ali Al Habsi after he was adjudged to have brought down Danny Welbeck but a Paul Scholes close-range effort, a goal from the Mexican and debut finishes from Alexander Buttner and Nick Powell, all in the second-half, were the difference.
New recruits Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa started on the bench as they were nursing knocks picked up on international duty and there was goalscoring debut from left-back Buttner. All of United's goals came in the second half, with Scholes' close-range strike in the 52st minute sparking the sluggish hosts into life at Old Trafford.
Javier Hernandez, playing ahead of the rested Robin van Persie, made it 2-0 before Buttner and Powell marked their first games for United with further goals in United's third straight league win.
Buttner deserved a goal for his lung-bursting runs down the left-hand side and one of those runs finally paid off. He beat three Wigan defender's for pace before side-stepping Ramis. The ball almost went out of play on the byline but instead of letting it go out, he smashed it across the face of the goal and the ball bounced of Al Habsi and into the goal.
The best of the goals was the fourth and final goal of the game and what a way to introduce yourself. Welbeck burst into the Wigan and ended up in a dead-end. The ball should have been cleared but ends up at the feet of Chicharito, he laid-off Powell on the edge of the area. The former Crewe man took a touch before rifling home from 20-yards.
