Liverpool: Manchester United and Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo received the European Golden Shoe trophy on Saturday.

The trophy fulfilled Ronaldo's wish to receive the award where he was born as a tribute to his late father.

Ronaldo was the European Footballer of the Year and scored 31 goals in the Premier League last season to win the honour.

He has been sidelined due to surgery on his right ankle in July; although there is speculation that he may return as soon as Wednesday's Champions League match against Villareal.

The Portugal international was expected to be out till October after undergoing an operation on his right ankle in July following the European Championship.

But manager Alex Ferguson said Ronaldo is ''likely to be involved'' when United begin their defence of the European Cup against Villarreal at Old Trafford.

''Ronaldo is training now, he's with the first team,'' Ferguson said on Friday. ''He's come on leaps and bounds."

''We mentioned a couple of weeks ago, he was making rapid progress in terms of overcoming the injury problem he had and the training he's been doing with the 'physios' and Tony Strudwick the fitness coach. He's been making great strides in the direction towards first-team football.''
