New Delhi: Indian football sensation Sunil Chettri may have come back to India after his failed attempt to impress the bosses at Coventry, but his captain, Bhaichung Bhutia sure has something to say about it.
Chettri, the brightest talent in Indian football, resourceful and energetic, and a striker with a bright future, is dealing with the disappointment of being rejected by English first second division club Coventry city.
Bhutia says, “He wasn’t advised well. Don’t think they (Coventry officials) were serious, why would they call him in mid winters then.”
Bhutia also says that the other kids can learn much from Chettri's experience – to dream big yes, but also to plan their careers smartly if they take the plunge into professional football.
“Learn from Sunil's experience, players should be careful to not be exploited. Clubs should call them pre season, not mid season,” adds Bhutia.
Baichung himself has played in the English second division. In fact, he is the only Indian footballer to have done so and the Indian captain doesn't undervalue the importance of such stints.
Not only players, but Indian football will also benefit if they go out of the country and play.
Other Indian players such as Steven Dias are also exploring options with professional clubs overseas, they will do well to keep Baichung's wise words in mind.
