Manchester United coach David Moyes, along with the club owners and board members, have decided to allow Bayern Munich go through the next round without referee even blowing the starting whistle. The decision comes after a two-hour long meeting after United officials informed UEFA and Bayern Munich that the Red Devils are in no position to face mighty Bayern and they want to avoid the gruelling clash over the next two legs.
Languishing seventh in the Premier League after a dismal first season under their new manager Moyes, United are underdogs in the CL quarter-finals and a far cry from the team that commanded respect around the world during Alex Ferguson's days. So United board members have decided that they don't want 'The Wrong One' to face more embarrassment on the field in the current season and they will allow Bayern to move into the semis.
The English champions have won their first four home matches in the competition, something they last did in the 2007-08 campaign when they made it six out of six and went on to lift the trophy for the third time in Moscow, but with depleted defence and with no world class midfield in their ranks, Moyes says the owners have told his team to have a day off with the family.
"We cannot afford one more embarrassment this season and we don't have a right mindset for this game, so we are allowing Bayern to go through." Moyes stunned reporters in a pre-match conference.
If the match would have taken place, it would have brought together two teams who have lifted the European Cup eight times between them and met in the 1999 final in Barcelona when United snatched an extraordinary 2-1 victory from the jaws of defeat with two stoppage-time goals.
But in the current scenario, Bayern would have thrashed United, so it could be a decision in United's best interest.
