NCERT Releases Revised Class 6 English Textbook, Focusses on Indian Culture and Authors
Developed in line with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 and the new National Education Policy 2020, NCERT has revised most chapters and rooted them in an Indian context

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) released a new English language textbook for class 6, ‘ Poorvi’. While the old book mostly had stories by non-Indian authors, the new textbook, in contrast, includes nine prose pieces by Indian authors and is situated in Indian settings while five poems are by non-Indian authors, reported Indian Express.

Developed in line with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023 and the new National Education Policy 2020, NCERT has revised most chapters and rooted them in an Indian context. The old NCERT English language textbook titled “Honeysuckle” featured eight poems of which seven were by non-Indian authors, and eight prose pieces of which five were by non-Indian authors. It also comprised the story ‘Fair Play’ by Munshi Premchand and “Banyan Tree’ by Ruskin Bond, the news agency reported.

Furthermore, the word ‘Bharat’ has been used for the first time in an NCERT textbook. The word has been used 19 times in the chapter titled “Culture and Tradition,” while India has been mentioned seven times, the report added. The chapter also contains a section titled ‘Hamara Bharat, Incredible India!’ which begins with a seven-sentence passage that refers to India only as ‘Bharat’. “Bharat has been known worldwide as a land of wise and heroic individuals…All these elements ensure that Bharat prospers and is respected globally,” reads the chapter.

Apart from this, a chapter on the uses of spices other than in cooking has also been included in the textbook as well as a chapter on on yoga and its benefits, the report stated.

NCERT had earlier announced that it would release new textbooks for classes 3 and 6 in April and May, however, it has been delayed. The class 3 textbooks are already available in the market. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had earlier directed all affiliated schools to follow the new syllabus and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 from the 2024-25 academic session. “Consequently, schools are advised to follow these new syllabi and textbooks for classes 3 and 6 in place of textbooks published by NCERT till the year 2023,” Joseph Emmanuel, Director (Academics), CBSE told PTI.
