Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was held by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22. A Delhi Court has sent the CM to judicial custody till April 15. A graduate of IIT Kharagpur and UPSC qualifier, Kejriwal has been allowed to carry three books in jail – Bhagavad Geeta, Ramayan, and a book How Prime Ministers Decide. Arvind Kejriwal Education

Born in 1968, he studied at Campus School in Hisar and Holy Child School in Sonipat. Thereafter, he cleared the IIT JEE in 1985 with a rank of 563. He got admission to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur from where he studied BTech in mechanical engineering. He completed his graduation in 1989.

Arvind Kejriwal As A UPSC Servant

Before entering politics in 2012, Kejriwal was an Indian Revenue Service. The 55-year-old had qualified for the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 1995 and joined the Indian Revenue Service as an Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax. He had also worked at Tata Steel. He was serving as the Joint Commissioner of Income Tax in New Delhi in 2006 when he resigned from the services.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Political Journey

Arvind Kejriwal became famous after the Jan Lokpal Bill with activist Anna Hazare. In 2012, Kejriwal started the Aam Aadmi Party and became the party’s national convenor. The seventh Chief Minister of Delhi has been in office since 2015. During the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, AAP won with a historic majority, obtaining 67 out of 70 assembly seats.

He was also the CM of Delhi for 49 days from December 2013 to February 2014.

He met his wife Sunita Kejriwal, also a former Indian Revenue Officer, during a training in Bhopal. An IRS officer of the 1994 batch, Sunita Kejriwal served in the Income Tax department for 22 years. In 2016, she opted for voluntary retirement from the IT dept. Her final assignment was as a commissioner of IT at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in Delhi. She holds a master’s degree in Zoology.

Their daughter Harshita Kejriwal cracked JEE Advanced when her father was lodged in Tihar Jail in 2014. She had secured rank 3322. She completed her graduation from IIT Delhi. She had scored 96 per cent in her board exams. While their son Pulkit Kejriwal completed CBSE with 96.4 per cent and is also an IIT graduate.
