Women’s T20 World Cup Semi-final Qualification Scenarios: New Zealand Pose Massive Threat to India in Group A
Back-to-back wins did put them back on track but their next assignment is against defending champions Australia and a big win can only safeguard their qualification chances.

A clinical win against Sri Lanka helped India jump up to the second spot on the Group A points table in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Harmanpreet Kaur & Co now have 2 wins from three games and 4 points in their kitty but yet not assured of a semi-final berth. In fact, the elimination threat still looms large as New Zealand have 2 more games to go.

India lost their campaign opener against the White Ferns by 58 runs to trail in the semi-final race. Back-to-back wins did put them back on track but their next assignment is against defending champions Australia and a big win can only safeguard their qualification chances.

Here are the possible scenarios of qualification in Group A

Scenario 1: If India beat Australia in their next game and New Zealand win both matches then the team with the best Net Run Rate (NRR) will progress to the next round.

Scenario 2: If India win their next game against Australia whereas New Zealand win only one of their 2 games then India will storm into the semis.

Scenario 3: If Australia beat India and New Zealand will both their games then India will be knocked out.

Scenario 4: If India lose to Australia and New Zealand win one out of their two remaining matches then the team with a better NRR will be through to the semis.

Scenario 5: If both India and New Zealand lose their remaining matches then the team with a better NRR will progress to the semis

Under the pump after the heavy loss to New Zealand and an underwhelming win over Pakistan, India’s hammering of Sri Lanka massively boosted their net run rate, elevating them to the second spot in Group A.

India next take on group leaders Australia in Sharjah on Sunday. It will be a change of venue for Harmanpreet Kaur and Co.

“For Sharjah, we will have three days off, If I am not wrong. So, we will work on the process and we will focus on what we can do to be confident. And hopefully, if we give our 100% individually then of course, we will win,” said Shafali Verma after defeating Sri Lank in their last fixture.
