Mumbai Indians is one of the most successful IPL teams. The Mumbai-based franchise has played in all 17 editions of the world’s richest franchise cricket league and managed to win the title on five occasions. In the 2024 edition of the cash-rich league, MI finished last in the points table. After a forgetful show last year, the Mumbai Indians would like to make a fresh start in 2025 and try to become the first team to win six IPL titles.
Ahead of the start of IPL 2025, MI will have a chance to retain as many as six players from the 2024 squad, and with some exciting Indian players in the ranks, the Ambani’s owned franchise would like to make the most of it and strengthen its squad.
Here’s a look at six players Mumbai Indians can retain ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions
Rohit Sharma: Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has been associated with the Mumbai-based franchise since 2011. The 37-year-old right-handed batter has scored 5458 runs in 212 IPL matches for the team and has led them to five IPL titles as well in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Rohit finished as the leading run scorer for MI in IPL 2024 and has been in red-hot form these days.
Jasprit Bumrah: Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers of all time. The 30-year-old cricketer made his IPL debut in 2013 and has been associated with MI since then. He has dismissed 165 batters in 133 IPL matches played so far for the franchise and was an integral part of the Rohit Sharma-led side’s that won IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.
Hardik Pandya: Hardik Pandya was signed by MI in a trade deal from the Gujarat Titans last year and was appointed as the team’s captain as well. The 30-year-old all-rounder is a four-time IPL champion with MI, and in 106 matches for the franchise, he has scored 1692 runs. Apart from that, he has also accounted for the dismissal of 53 batters in 72 innings.
Suryakumar Yadav: India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is one of the best T20 batters of present times. The 34-year-old Mumbaikar is the third-leading run scorer for India in T20Is and has 2986 runs in 96 matches for the Ambani-owned franchise. Apart from his aggressive batting in the middle order, Surya is also a very reliable fielder.
Tilak Varma: Tilak Varma made his IPL debut for the Mumbai Indians in 2022, and in the last three seasons, he has scored 1156 runs in 38 matches for the franchise. The left-handed batter is a very reliable middle-order batter who can change gears at will, and with age by his side (21 years), he can serve the franchise for many years.
Nehal Wadhera (Uncapped): According to IPL rules, every franchise has to retain at least one uncapped player if they are going for all six retentions, and in such a case, Nehal Wadhera, who has 350 runs to his name in 20 IPL matches played so far, can be retained by the Mumbai Indians. The 24-year-old Ludhiana-born cricketer has played some impactful knocks for MI in the last couple of IPL seasons.
Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Akash Madwal, Arjun Tendulkar, and Piyush Chawla are few other uncapped Indian players who can be considered by MI if they decide against retaining Wadhera.
