India’s home season kicked off in Chennai, but it wasn’t an ideal start. The morning mayhem was consigned to history after Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja rescued India with a record unbroken seventh-wicket partnership to take them to 339/6 at the close of play on Day 1 of the first Test.
Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6) were sent packing cheaply by Hasan Mahmud with India suffering a top-order collapse after being asked to bat first at Chepauk by Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Leaving behind the disappointment of opening day, the duo of Rohit and Gill were seen sweating it out ahead of the start of play on Day 2.
They were joined by the members of India’s coaching staff with Gambhir falling behind Gill while Rohit ambling alongside assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.

Ashwin, Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Hasan grabbed the headlines on Day 1 of the Test.
Hasan made the best use of seam-friendly conditions to prize out India’s top-order trio cheaply before Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant combined to repair the early damage of the morning session. After lunch, Bangladesh hit back with three more wickets including that of Pant, Jaiswal and KL Rahul to leave India struggling at 144/6 in 42.2 overs.
With India under pressure, Ashwin and Jadeja produced a scintillating show to add 199 runs for the seventh wicket and bring their team back in the contest.
Ashwin completed a fine half-century – the sixth of his Test career – while Jadeja made 86.
This is India’s first Test after the appointment of Gambhir as their head coach and his predecessor Rahul Dravid has high hopes from his former India teammate.
“He (Gambhir) has got a lot of experience, as a player also he has played a lot, he obviously coached quite a bit. I am sure he will be great,” said Dravid who signed off after guiding India to T20 World Cup title earlier this year.
