West Indies thrashed England in the last group game to reach the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. When the match was underway at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on October 15, the coaching unit of the men’s team had their eyes set on the screen. They broke into an emphatic celebration after Aaliyah Alleyn completed a 142-run chase with a boundary to seal the knockout spot.
The men’s white-ball coach, Daren Sammy, appeared to be the most excited one in the group. The two-time T20 World Cup winner cheerfully high-fived his fellow staff members and appreciated the efforts of the women’s team.
A clip of the celebration was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Windies Cricket with the caption, “Full support all around! The Men in Maroon staff react to the Maroon Warriors securing a semifinal spot in the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup.”

With Hayley Matthews in charge, West Indies failed to make a positive start to this Women’s T20 World Cup. They opened the campaign with a ten-wicket defeat to South Africa. The Caribbean unit bounced back in the next game and beat Scotland by six wickets.
West Indies continued the winning momentum in the next game against Bangladesh and registered an eight-wicket win. They had to triumph over England in the last group game by a good margin to book their ticket to the semi-finals.
An unbeaten half-century by Nat Sciver-Brunt helped England produce 141 in 20 overs. Apart from her, no other batter was able to make any notable contribution. Afy Fletcher was the top-performing bowler for the West Indies. The spinner finished with a three-wicket haul, conceding 21 runs in four overs.
Hayley Matthews and Qiana Joseph gave the West Indies a perfect start. The duo stitched an opening partnership of 102 runs. Matthews contributed with a 38-ball fifty while Joseph chipped in with a 52-run knock featuring six boundaries and two sixes.
Following their dismissals, Deandra Dottin took over the charge and struck a quickfire 27 off 19 balls. Aaliyah Alleyn stepped up with an unbeaten cameo in the end and guided her team to a win by hitting two boundaries in the 18th over. West Indies will meet New Zealand in the semi-final of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday, October 18.
