Coming in at number four for the Rajasthan Royals, Riyan Parag has managed to change his fortunes in the Indian Premier League as he has started off the 2024 season in style. In the second fixture against the Delhi Capitals, the youngster managed to rescue the Royals’ innings with a measured knock of 84 in 45 deliveries.
The Royals were in deep trouble having lost their top-order batters for cheap within the powerplay. But Parag who has been given the number four position showcased his game awareness as he played through the tough periods and waited for his moments.
Speaking after the first innings, Parag revealed that it was the hard work done before the season that had led to such an innings. He said,” I have put in a lot of practice, I’ve practised against those kinds of pace (on Nortje)”.

The youngster from Assam knew when to go on the offensive as he waited till the final stretch where he let loose to attack the bowlers regularly. Commenting on the same, he said,” I had my options ready for both sides of the wicket – I was backing my strengths, I knew I had the power, and it’s good when it comes off”.
He also revealed the message he received from the skipper in the middle which was to take the game as deep as possible and get himself set with the bat. He added,” Sanju bhai told me to take it deep, I was confident that I could get a lot of runs. It wasn’t easy for a new batter to come and score, you needed someone to stay until the end”.

Parag is someone who has been widely criticised for not being able to perform consistently despite being backed by the Royals since 2019. He came in at just 18 years old where he made his debut in the IPL and has come a long way since. He has been a regular contributor for his side in the domestic circuit and has now been able to do the same for the franchise.

Reflecting on his journey the 22-year-old was emotional as he concluded by saying,” It’s been tough, I’m a bit emotional now, but I have worked hard and seen the fruits of it now”.
