Speaking to Lallantop, Raina talked about the qualifier game between CSK and Kings XI Punjab (now known as Punjab Kings) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in 2014. To add some context, in the first innings, opening batter, Virender Sehwag had gone on a rampage to score 122 in 58 deliveries as Punjab finished with a target of 227 runs for CSK.

However, CSK lost both their openers cheaply. But Raina seemed to be unfazed and unstoppable with the bat as he raced to his half-century within 16 balls. He was eventually dismissed as he was run out in the first delivery after the powerplay with a legendary knock of 87 in 25 balls. CSK’s innings just crumbled from thereon despite the efforts of MS Dhoni almost single-handedly looking to take the side home, he finished with 42 in 31 balls but the Super Kings were on the losing end which even infuriated the skipper.

Raina revealed,” I have never seen Dhoni this angry. He was expressing his frustrations after the match saying ‘We don’t score runs, we don’t do this, that’. He had thrown his helmets and pads in the dressing room and was irritated because we lost a game that we could have won. We could have won the IPL that year as well”.

Thala’s frustrations were also evident, especially during the post-match presentation ceremony where he was very critical of the side’s batting unit. He had commented,” It was something we could have achieved, the reason being Suresh and the way he batted. In the middle overs, there was some irresponsible cricket by some of the experienced international guys, so we do need to have a look”.
