Team India hold a 101-run lead over England at lunch on Day 3 of the first of five Tests in the series at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday.
India opened the third day of the first Test with a 175-run lead, but could manage to add just 15 runs before being bowled out for 436 runs by the English bowling unit as the hosts established a 190-run lead at the end of their first innings.
Ravindra Jadeja, who started the day on 81 runs, added just 6 runs to his tally before being dismissed by Joe Root. Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who walked in to replace Jadeja did not survive for long as he too was sent back to the hut by Root for a duck off the first delivery he faced.
Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj held the crease for a short while in the first session of the third day of the game, before Rehan Ahmed polished off the Indian innings as he castled Axar after the left-handed batsman had put on 44 runs on the board off his willow.
Root was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors as he ended the innings with 4 wickets for 79 runs.
England began their second innings with positive intent as openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett put up a 45-run stand for the opening wicket before Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Crawley for 31 runs.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma held onto the catching opportunity provided to him at slips without any error as the 36-year-old got to 100 first-class catches.
Ollie Pope walked out to bat following Crawley’s dismissal and held crease alongside Duckett as the teams headed back to the dressing room for lunch.
The English side chomped down on the Indian lead as they scored a huge chunk of their 89 runs coming off the reverse sweep. Duckett and Pope were unbeaten at 38 and 16 runs as the umpire signalled for lunch.
