BCCI Likely To Announce Retention Rules For IPL 2025 On Saturday – Reports
Apart from deciding on the number of retentions, the IPL Governing Council is also expected to take a call on the date and venue of the mega-auction.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce the retention rules for the upcoming 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday (September 28). According to a report in Cricbuzz, the IPL Governing Council is set to meet on Saturday in Bengaluru, and the announcement is expected in the next 24 hours.

As per the available information, the meeting of the IPL’s Governing Council has been scheduled to take place at 11.30 AM at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bengaluru.

There is no official clarity over the number of retentions per team. It is speculated that the numbers could range between 2 and 8. The BCCI might settle at a number somewhere in the middle, 5-6, including the RTM option.

Apart from deciding on the number of retentions per team, the Governing Council is also expected to take a decision on the date and venue of the IPL 2025 mega-auction. If reports are to be believed, then the IPL 2025 mega auction could take place in a Gulf City at the end of November.

Saudi Arabia is keen to host the auction, and if the GC approves, it may even be held in Riyadh. The 2024 IPL auction was organised at Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai on December 19, 2024.

Will Dhoni play in IPL 2025?

Former Indian men’s cricket team captain MS Dhoni, who announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020, played in the 2024 edition of the cash-rich league. He, however, didn’t captain the side and passed on the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who in his maiden season in charge failed to take the team into the playoffs.

Since the conclusion of IPL 2024, there are question marks over Dhoni’s availability for the upcoming season. It will be interesting to see if the five-time IPL champion makes himself available to play once again in the world’s richest franchise cricket league.

Apart from Dhoni, there are doubts over Rohit Sharma’s future in the IPL as well. The Indian captain has been associated with the Mumbai Indians since IPL 2011, and it will be interesting to see if he is retained by the franchise ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions.
