The Tamil heist action comedy Japan, starring Karthi and directed by Raju Murugan, hit theatres ahead of the Diwali festival on November 10. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews from both audiences and critics, the film garnered attention for its unique storyline. Within a month of its theatrical release, the movie found its way to the OTT platform, Netflix, which acquired the streaming rights.
Netflix initially announced the streaming of Japan in its original Tamil language on December 11. However, this decision disappointed fans of Karthi in other regions who were eager to watch the film. The news sparked discussions on social media, prompting Netflix to reconsider its approach. As a recent report suggests, the streaming platform has decided to release dubbed versions of the film in Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi, in addition to the original Tamil version.
Despite its intriguing concept, Japan faced challenges at the box office, earning only Rs 21.30 crore gross (Rs 18.17 crore net) in India and Rs 5.25 crore overseas. The clash with Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda DoubleX is cited as a significant factor contributing to the film’s commercial struggles.
Director Raju Murugan, while describing the movie before its release, mentioned that it revolves around a character and incorporates various elements, including entertainment and family dynamics. He emphasised that the film explores a new zone for him, promising a delightful experience.
Produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu under Dream Warrior Pictures, Japan features cinematography by Ravi Varman and editing by Philomin Raj, known for his work in films like Vikram and Leo.
Looking ahead, Karthi is set to appear in the upcoming Tamil-language film Vaa Vaathiyaare, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy. Produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja under Studio Green, the film stars Karthi and Krithi Shetty in lead roles.
