While presenting the Union Budget for 2018-2019, Finance Minister Arun Jaitely set ambitious targets for the Indian Railways, with a capital expenditure of Rs. 1.48 lakh crore.

For the second time, the railway budget was presented as a part of the general budget, instead of being presented separately, as was the case prior to 2016. *18,000 kms of doubling of railway tracks would eliminate capacity constraints

*India is moving towards optimum electrification of railway

*Over 3,600 km of track renewal is being targeted in 2018-19

*Railway Capital Expenditure is set at Rs. 1.48 lakh crores.

*4,267 unmanned level crossings to be eliminated in two years

*All stations and trains to gave WiFi

*Rs. 17,000 crore allocated for Bengaluru Metro

*Rs. 11,000 crore allocated for Mumbai Suburban Rail network
