A total of 49 people were killed in a fire that broke out in a building housing workers in Kuwait’s Mangaf city out of which 40 were Indians, said the Ministry of External Affairs. The incident took place on June 12. Around 200 workers were living in the sic-storey building where the fire incident took place, as per local media reports. Every year lakhs of people from India go to work in Gulf countries including Kuwait. The high minimum wage for unskilled labour in Kuwait is one of the prime reasons for the migration of Indians to this Middle Eastern country. There is a high demand for both Indian professionals and labour in countries like Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran and Kuwait, therefore, every year thousands of Indians go to Kuwait for work. As per the Indian Embassy, in Kuwait, the unskilled labour, helpers and cleaners get 100 Kuwaiti Dinars ( Rs 27,265) per month. It includes agricultural labour, farmer, construction labour, gardener labour, printing labour, technical labour and car washing. The labourers working with heavy machinery including fabricators and lathe workers get 140 to 170 Kuwaiti Dinars (Rs 38,172.93 to 46,352.85) per month.

The minimum wage varies as per skill. The Semi-skilled jobs such as barber, delivery boy, security guard, washerman and other jobs of similar skills fetch an income between 100-120 Kuwaiti Dinars (Rs 27,265 to 32,720) per month. It is quite high if compared to India.

The minimum wages for unskilled labour are different in different states of India. According to the information available on the website of India Briefing, the wages for unskilled labour in Andaman is Rs 16,328, in Andhra Rs 13,000, in Arunachal Rs 6600, in Assam Rs 9800, in Bihar Rs 10,660, in Chandigarh Rs 13659.

The value of one Kuwaiti Dinar is Rs 272. The average salary of a skilled artisan in Kuwait is around 1,260 Kuwaiti Dinars (about Rs 3,43,324.80) per month. The minimum salary for an Indian in Kuwait is around 320 Kuwaiti Dinars (about Rs 87,193.60) monthly.
