Mumbai: The markets are back in action and closed with some hefty gains on the back of heavy buying seen in the frontliners. The BSE Sensex closed up nearly 400 points, the biggest intra day gain since May 18, 2004. The Nifty gained around 130 points.
The Sensex closed at 10,451.33 up 3.77 per cent or 380 points.
The Nifty closed at 3091 up 129 points.
However, the BSE Midcap was down 0.77 per cent at 4,873.40 and the BSE Smallcap was down 2.54 per cent at 5,986.36.
The major gainers on the indices were Maruti Udyog, Hindalco, HLL and HDFC.
The metal index advanced 4.76 per cent to close at 8,572.86. Stocks like Hindalco,Tata Steel, Nalco, Sterlite Ind and SAIL witnessed buying interest.
The auto index gained 4.2 per cent and closed at 4,773.74. Stocks like Maruti Udyog, Tata Motors, TVS Motor, Cummins and Hero Honda flared up.
The FMCG index closed with a gain of 3.86 per cent at 1,895.20. Stocks like HLL, Dabur India, Britannia, Tata Tea and McDowell spurted.
The oil & gas index was up 3.49 per cent at 5,081.03. Stocks like GAIL, ONGC, BPCL, Reliance and HPCL gained.
The BSE Bankex gained 2.38 per cent at 4,842.56. UTI Bank, PNB, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra, and ICICI Bank closed higher.
The IT index was up 2.37 per cent and closed at 3,618.23. Stocks like Wipro, TCS, Infosys, Satyam and HCL Tech closed higher.
The health care index gained 1.77 per cent to close at 3,355.65. Stocks like Ranbaxy Labs, Aurobindo Pharm, Glaxo Smith Kline, Sun Pharma, Biocon, Orchid Chemical witnessed buying interest.
The consumer durables index was up 1.89 per cent at 3,029.62. Stocks like BPL, Su-Raj Diamonds, Titan Industries, climbed higher.
The capital goods index gained 1.44 per cent to close at 7,198.21. ABB, BHEL, Thermax, Bharat Elec, Siemens, Praj Industries are among the top gainers.
