Shahid Kapoor On His Comeback To Romance Genre: 'After Kabir Singh, I Didn’t Hear Anything...' | Exclusive
Answering a News18 question, Shahid said that cracking the perfect script for a love story is difficult as he’s keen on offering something new to the audience.

Shahid Kapoor, who is fondly known for his ‘lover boy’ image in films like Ishq Vishq, Jab We Met, Kismat Konnection and Vivaah, switched gears by taking on grey characters in stories such as Farzi and Bloody Daddy. The last time he starred in a love story was an out-and-out intense film -Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s 2019 film Kabir Singh. Five years later, the actor is back stepping into the world of love stories with his upcoming film Tere Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. At the trailer launch event of the film, Shahid revealed exclusively to News18 about what kept him away from romantic entertainers.

Shahid shared that cracking the perfect script for a romantic love story is difficult for him, as he’s keen on offering something new to the audience with his filmi outings. “I was kind of missing doing something light and fun, definitely, but honestly, it’s the most difficult genre to crack. Because, I mean, I listen to 10 scripts a month, and people don’t know that there’s so much you hear from others – people tell me ‘aur picture karo’. But it’s so difficult to find scripts that could offer the audience something new, and love story is the most difficult genre, I feel, to do. And then, I just found this film was answering that question of mine, like what is it that you can do new in a love story.”

The actor further added that he couldn’t find stories as exciting and different as Kabir Singh. “Like, when I did Kabir Singh, the character was new for me, the entire journey, the way that entire relationship was, it was shocking, but it was new. And post that I didn’t hear anything that exciting in the world of love stories and then this film popped up.”

He continued, “I was like, this is it. We have to tell a love story that hasn’t been told before, will people like it, will they not like it, will they accept it, will they not accept it – that’s the journey as an artist. As a creative person, you have to take that journey. You have to take that risk, and I think when you take a risk, there’s a chance of surprising people, you have to go beyond that fear that hasn’t been done before. If you feel that, what has come to you has a lot of potential, and that’s pretty much how I reacted to this project.”

The Jersey actor also said that that he wouldn’t call TBAUJ a complete rom-com as it has much more to offer. In the film, his co-star Kriti Sanon essays the role of a robot. The duo then fall for each other, and navigate the complexities that come their way. “I wouldn’t call this film a rom com, because romcoms are just about a boy and girl. I think, there’s a lot more in this film. I’d say that we found it very difficult to mount this film, or what to call it, and then ‘An Impossible Love Story’ just felt right. It’s love story, it’s an entertainer, it also has a big element of family, with a very strong support cast. It’s a little bigger than that, of course I would say the first half and hour of the film is a rom com and then it kind of goes to many other places from there.”

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, produced by Maddock Films, is all set to hit the theatres on February 9. The film also stars Dharmendra and Dimple Kapadia in pivotal roles.
