Numerous instances of migrants in Bengaluru encountering difficulties with locals pressuring them to use Kannada instead of other languages have emerged on the internet. But a heartwarming encounter with a local family renewed the faith of a Uttar Pradesh resident who had relocated to Bengaluru about a year ago. This touching story was shared on Reddit, shedding light on the brighter side of the city’s narrative.
Posted on the ‘Bangalore’ subreddit, a user with the handle @Vegetable_Limit_3395 recounted an incident when their mother came to visit them, and they decided to take her to Shivgange, a Hindu pilgrimage site. “We reached early morning and were kind of confused as everything was written in Kannada. I tried google translate but it was not working on those old and rubbed out walls. There were some people who were asking for a lot of money in exchange of help regarding the timings and information. I felt frustrated, specially because I wanted my mom to have a good time and this was turning into a nightmare and I could see her a bit sad about not being able to understand the rich history of temples,” they narrated.

It was at this moment that their outgoing mother approached a local family for assistance. Initially, the user was apprehensive due to their previous negative experiences with older uncles and aunties in joint families who had urged them to learn the language to stay in the city. They expected rude responses or similar behaviour. However, the outcome was quite different: the local family explained everything, took them trekking with their own family, shared insights about Shivgange, their annual visits, and even recommended various temples in Bangalore and nearby areas.
“My mom was so happy, as she got to learn so much and also her pooja experience went so good. I felt so belonged, as if I came with my own family,” the user shared.
They expressed their gratitude to the family that offered help and to the city for not letting them down this time.
