Bengaluru Rains: Social Media 'Drenched' in Memes As Residents Seek Humour Amid Heavy Downpour
Bengaluru rains affect residents as heavy downpour leads to water-clogging in several areas. However, the struggle comes with a bit of humour on social media.

Since the early hours of October 9, Bengaluru has been under a constant deluge of rain, leading to widespread traffic jams and flooding across the city. The evening rush hour only exacerbated the vehicular chaos as residents headed home from their workplaces. Yet, amid the collective frustration over the notorious traffic and rain-soaked roads, Bengalureans refused to let go of their sense of humor and turned to the digital realm to keep the laughter alive.

Jokes and memes swamped the micro-blogging haven of ‘X’ as Bengalureans exhibited their flair for wit and satire. One mirthful user couldn’t resist commenting, “Spice Garden is back with Water Sports activities…Side jump, long jump, swimming, pulling vehicle, pushing vehicle, guessing potholes, etc.” Another humourously remarked, “It’s time to learn how to swim,” while a third user added a dash of sarcasm, “After free bus rides, time for free boat rides, water logging taxes?”

In this way, humour and witty sarcasm ensured that the #BengaluruRains remained a hot topic on ‘X.’

Describing the situation, citizens were taken by surprise by the heavy to moderate showers that drenched the city on Monday evening, following a prolonged period of dry weather. The rain resulted in traffic snarls and flooding in numerous areas. Hosur Road, Nayandahalli, Vijayanagar, MG Road, Hesarghatta Cross, and Peenya experienced severe traffic congestion, while the underpasses at Seshadripuram and the Kalyan Nagar Bridge were submerged.

Rain began pouring in many areas around 4 p.m. and persisted throughout the night. Traffic police were forced to close several roads and underpasses, including one near Kalpana Junction on Cunningham Road, a section of Kanakapura Road near Yashasvi International School, Croma service road, and the Electronics City elevated flyover toward the city due to waterlogging.

Thus, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, issued a yellow alert for the city on Tuesday. IMD officials predicted that most areas would experience moderate to heavy showers. They explained that a trough passing from Tamil Nadu to Kanyakumari at 1.5 km above sea level would bring heavy rains to many districts in Karnataka over the next three days. Despite Bengaluru experiencing an 81 percent rain deficit between October 1 and 9, the IMD’s long-range forecast indicated a 60 percent chance of normal rainfall in many districts, according to the officials.
