Noida International Airport (NIA) has achieved an important milestone by completing the calibration of its Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI).
The calibration process started on October 10 and wrapped up on October 14, 2024, using a Beech King Air 360ER aircraft from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
This crucial step, supported by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is vital for ensuring the highest safety standards for aircraft operations at the airport.
What is the ILS?
The ILS is a radio navigation system that provides pilots with precise guidance during landings, especially in low visibility conditions. It consists of two key components:
- Localizer: Helps align the aircraft with the runway’s centerline for horizontal guidance.
- Glide Path Antenna: Offers vertical guidance, ensuring a safe and smooth descent.
This system is vital for allowing pilots to land safely, even when visibility is poor due to weather conditions like fog or rain. It plays a significant role in maintaining airport efficiency and reducing delays.
What is the PAPI?
The PAPI consists of lights situated beside the runway, giving pilots visual cues about their correct descent angle during final approach.
The successful calibration of both the ILS and PAPI marks an important step forward for Noida International Airport as it gears up for its operational launch.
