In a major development ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will see an addition of around 300 km of new railway tracks.
This massive expansion, involving projects worth Rs 16,240 crore, is set to improve the city’s lifeline – its suburban railway network.
According to Deccan Herald, Vaishnaw recently visited Mumbai to review these projects and checked on the redevelopment of the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The MMR covers Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, and parts of Palghar, Thane, and Raigad districts.
Key projects under Central Railway include:
- CSMT-Kurla 5th & 6th line (17.5 km): Phase 1 from Parel to Kurla (10.1 km) is expected by December 2025.
- Kalyan-Asangaon 4th line (32 km): Land acquisition ongoing, targeted for December 2026.
- Kalyan-Kasara 3rd line (67 km): Phase 1 Asangaon-Kasara by February 2025, Phase 2 Kalyan-Asangaon by December 2025.
- Nilje-Kopar double chord line (5 km): Under progress.
Western Railway’s projects include:
- Mumbai Central-Borivali 6th line (30 km): Khar-Goregaon section (8.9 km) already commissioned, remaining Goregaon-Borivali (8.2 km) by March 2025.
- Naigaon-Juichandra double chord line (6 km): Work in progress.
Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) projects include:
- Panvel-Karjat suburban corridor (29.6 km): Completion expected by December 2025.
- Airoli-Kalwa elevated link: Phase 1 Digha Gaon Station already commissioned.
- Kalyan-Badlapur 3rd & 4th line (14.05 km): Completion by December 2025.
- Virar-Dahanu 3rd & 4th line (64 km): In progress, with Borivali-Virar 5th & 6th line (26 km) expected by December 2027.
With these developments, Mumbai’s suburban railway system is set for a significant transformation, enhancing connectivity and easing commutes for millions.
