Kochi Metro Plans To Introduce Shared Auto Services For Connectivity
Kochi Metro plans to introduce shared auto services, enhancing last-mile connectivity. Despite challenges, a trial run is set between Cusat station and the university.

Along the metro corridors in Kochi, also known as Cochin, shared auto services may soon become a reality.

Following the authorization to incorporate shared mobility in its feeder service, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is preparing to conduct a study to assess demand and traffic patterns, as reported by The New Indian Express.

While most Keralites are inexperienced with shared-auto services, the concept has proven to be cost-effective and handy in places such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Jaipur.

The state’s Regional Transport Authority (RTA) approved shared-auto services in 2022, but nothing happened. Furthermore, the state’s auto unions are known to be opposed to the proposal, and it remains to be seen how they will respond once the project is underway, as per reports.

Reportedly, the RTA order allowed for up to three passengers in a vehicle — only e-autos — and the collection of a minimum of 10 for every 2 km travelled. The idea is thought to be essential to provide metro passengers with reasonably priced last-mile connectivity. The Kochi Metro project was designed to provide a sustainable and cheap means of public transport.

“Shared auto is among the strategies we are considering to enhance the affordability of metro travel. The study will identify demand and address transit gaps, focusing on areas lacking bus connectivity or experiencing service deficiencies. It does not make sense to travel in the metro for Rs 30, only to pay Rs 50 to hire an auto to reach the final destination,” said a Kochi Metro Rail Limited official as quoted by The New Indian Express.

The first shared-auto service will operate on a trial basis between Cusat metro station and the university campus, which spans 180 acres, the official added.

Giving more information on the traffic plan, the official noted that the Kochi Regional Transport Authority has approved shared mobility. Also, negotiations are ongoing, taking into account the conventional autos that travel the route. The concerned authority is developing a system that will not affect other drivers, according to reports. “Cusat is ideal as students can utilise the service within the campus,” the KMRL official said.

In addition, the Kochi Metro officials stated that shared mobility is one of their future ideas, but they also acknowledged that implementing it would be difficult.
