The southern part of Mumbai’s Coastal Road connecting to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link opened on Thursday, reducing the travel time from Bandra to Marine Drive to just 12 minutes. The connection will relieve traffic congestion at the Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk in Worli.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar were scheduled to be present at the inauguration. The road was to be opened to traffic after green signal from the Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk.
As part of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (South), this new southern bridge will link the North Channel Line (Chowpatty to Worli) with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
The Coastal Road extends 10.58-km from the Princess Street Flyover to the Worli Sea Link, allowing commuters to travel from Marine Drive to Bandra in just 12 minutes.
The 4.5-km-long Bandra-Worli Sea Link has now been connected to this coastal route, enabling signal-free traffic from Marine Drive to Bandra. The 136-meter stretch has been completed with the installation of the largest boosting arch girder, weighing 2,000 metric tonnes.
The entire Coastal Road project spans 29 km and has been built at a cost of Rs 12,721 crore. It includes three internal roads of 15.66 km and two tunnels of 2.07 km.
