Passengers on a Taiwan-bound Korean Air flight got nosebleeds, severe ear pain and suffered from other health issues when there was a cabin pressure malfunction due to a sudden drop in altitude. The airline later apologised for the incident and has assured an investigation into the cause of the malfunction.
While some passengers experienced nosebleeds others suffered from hyperventilation and severe discomfort as well as pain in the ear. There were no major injuries reported, but at least 13 passengers were taken to hospital for medical attention after the pilot safely landed back at Incheon Airport, which serves the capital Seoul.
According to a report published by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, there was chaos onboard due to the incident as the plane rapidly descended from more than 30,000 feet to 9,000 feet. This precipitous drop in altitude caused the cabin pressurisation system to malfunction, triggering health issues and intense discomfort among passengers.
The report said two flyers suffered nosebleeds, while 15 others complained of ear pain and hyperventilation. A Taiwanese passenger posted a video on her Instagram, describing how the plane dropped shortly after meal service and there was turbulence in the cabin.
A report in the Dimsum Daily said children on board were frightened and started crying. Soon, the pilot decided to turn the aircraft around and made an emergency landing at the Incheon International Airport. Passengers on this flight reportedly departed on another flight, 19 hours behind schedule.
