Pakistan foreign ministry condemned the killing of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh and extended condolences on behalf of the nation to his family and the people of Palestine.
Hamas said Wednesday its political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike in Iran, where he was attending the swearing-in of the new president, and vowed the act “will not go unanswered”.
“Pakistan condemns the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the Chief of the Political Bureau of Hamas in Tehran today. We extend our condolences to his family and the people of Palestine,” the Pakistani government said in a statement.
It also appeared to accuse Israel of the act and said that it was behaving recklessly and its actions were harming peace efforts in the region. It also said that it ‘condemns terrorism’, appearing to accuse Israel of committing terrorism on Iranian soil.
“We are deeply shocked by the timing of this reckless act, coinciding with the inauguration of the President of Iran, an event attended by several foreign dignitaries, including the Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan,” the Pakistani foreign ministry said.
“Pakistan views with serious concern the growing Israeli adventurism in the region. Its latest acts constitute a dangerous escalation in an already volatile region and undermine efforts for peace. It condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations including extrajudicial and extraterritorial killings irrespective of the motives,” the foreign ministry said in its statement.
Neighbouring Afghanistan’s Taliban government said Wednesday the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in neighbouring Iran was “a great loss”, hailing him as “an intelligent and resourceful Palestinian leader”.
“He was successful and left the lessons of resistance, sacrifice, patience, tolerance, struggle and practical sacrifice to his followers,” Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.
Haniyeh’s death makes him the latest Hamas official to be killed by Israel since the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks, when militants killed 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages. The devastating Israel-Hamas war the attacks set off has become the deadliest and longest in the Arab-Israeli conflict. More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to health officials in Gaza.
