GEORGE FLOYD-OFFICERS-CIVIL RIGHTS-CONVICTING COPS — First, it was Mohamed Noor convicted of murder for shooting an innocent citizen who approached his police SUV. Then it was Derek Chauvin, perhaps the most notable defendant, also found guilty of murder for pinning George Floyd to a Minneapolis street as he gasped for air. Finally, it was Kim Potter, guilty of manslaughter for shooting a young Black man in a traffic stop. Three recent convictions of police officers, all in the Minneapolis area, have some people asking: Is something changing with juries historic unwillingness to convict cops charged with bad acts? As three more officers head for federal trial in Floyds death, some legal experts say the answer is: Maybe. By Amy Forliti. UPCOMING: 950 words, photos.

GEORGE FLOYD-OFFICERS-CIVIL RIGHTS — Jury selection opens Thursday in the federal trial for the three Minneapolis police officers who joined Derek Chauvin in the fatal restraint of George Floyd in May 2020. Tou Thao, J. Kueng and Thomas Lane are charged broadly with depriving Floyd of his civil rights under the color of law. The case against the fired officers revolves largely around their failure to stop Chauvin from pressing his knee into Floyds neck as Floyd gasped for air, and that they didnt offer medical care. GEORGE FLOYD-OFFICERS-WHO ARE THEY? The bystander video that captured George Floyds death made Derek Chauvin a familiar and notorious face almost immediately, as did the weeks-long state trial that found him guilty of murder. The three other Minneapolis police officers going on trial in federal court in Floyds death are less well known. The two who helped restrain Floyd were rookies just a few days into their jobs as full-fledged officers. One of those, and the officer who held back a handful of concerned citizens, were minority officers in a department seeking to become more diverse. By Steve Karnowski. UPCOMING: 900 words, photos.
