The hallways, bedroom, living area to washroom, everything here is compressed.

Le Havre City in France has a unique house which has been named as Narrow House. When you step inside the house, it will feel like a lot has been squeezed into a small space. The unbelievable views of the inside of the house have left the internet intrigued and are making everyone reconsider how living in a constricted space might look like. The video has set the internet buzzing. Narrow House was first opened to the public on June 24, 2022. The hallways, bedroom, living area to washroom, everything here is compressed. It attempts to raise questions about space and the disturbing thought about personal space being constricted, restricted or invaded. Narrow House has been built by artist Erwin Wurm. In an interview earlier, he shared that one does not have to be deadly serious. The artist chose to add a sense of humour to his creations, as he created interactive art by using everyday environments and materials.

The video was shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. It shows a person entering a narrow house and first sees a compressed dining table and area, which further leads to a library-living area. Various artefacts like telephones, couches, and coffee tables are extremely narrow. The caption read, “NARROW HOUSE by Erwin Wurm. Erwin Wurm’s Narrow House (2010) is installed on the Square Claude Érignac in Le Havre, France, and opened to the public on 24 June 2022. Wurm has already produced several models of this work, but this is the only permanent outdoor installation of Narrow House. The structure is a reinterpretation of Wurm’s childhood home, a typical suburban abode from the 1960s, surrounded by a wooded, landscaped garden in Le Havre that gives the impression of a residential neighbourhood. What do you think? Let us know!”

In an interview with a media portal, the artists discussed Narrow House. As such it is indeed an architectural marvel and makes a statement regarding the future house when land becomes scarce and the population increases. He clarified that it is “not a skinny house”, but a narrow house because it is squeezed.

He further explained that while thinking about which house he could use as a model, he decided to use his parents’ house which was built in the 60s. According to him, it “transported him to a very specific, post-Second World War society, which was still very rigid.”
