A good travel destination is one which has repeat value, which means a tourist would visit the place multiple times. But from the looks of it, Wales in the UK is certainly not one of them as a recent ruling has reduced visitor footfall. In Wales, the speed limit for vehicles was reduced to 20 miles per hour last year. That means the speed allowed now is only 32 kilometres per hour. This speed limit rule came into effect on September 17 last year. Wales was the first country to do so, reducing the speed limit on all roads to 20 miles per hour. This unique rule was made after the results of research by Edinburgh Napier University and public health providers. It was estimated in the research that after the implementation of the new rule, there will be a 40 percent reduction in accidents. Despite noble intentions, the response from citizens was far from positive.
People took to the streets demanding the removal of this law. The Conservatives even brought a no-confidence motion against the Climate Change Minister. The protests over the law ended within a few months, but some concerns still persist, as many working in the tourism sector fear that people may not come back as tourists. Many people have also expressed this displeasure on Wales online. People say that they are facing a lot of trouble commuting due to the new rule of slow speed. Many people are saying in the comments that they will be stressed out with this speed limit rule, so they will not visit Wales.
Interestingly, there was a 4 percent rise in the number of tourists visiting Wales in 2023 compared to 2022. It’s worth noting that this increase occurred during the last three months of the year when a new law was implemented, so these statistics might not fully reflect the actual situation. It’s also noteworthy that a significant portion of dissatisfied tourists hail from England. Despite this, concerns remain prevalent among many individuals.
