An airport X-ray has arrested a Namibian woman who had swallowed dozens of cocaine bullets. As per reports, the woman, a 30-year-old was arrested upon her arrival at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Her identity remains disclosed. She was arrested following a tip-off to the police about a drug carrier on a flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
After an X-ray was performed on the woman, the authorities managed to recover over 60 of these cocaine bullets. National police spokesperson, Brig Athlenda Mathe, told the Express, “The team immediately intercepted the drug mule as she was making her way through immigration. She was immediately arrested, and taken to a local hospital where a medical X-ray confirmed and detected foreign objects in her stomach. She has already released more than 60 bullets of suspected cocaine thus far. She is currently under police guard and custody.”
Athlenda further added that the value of the drugs could not be determined yet. This is because the process of releasing all suspected drugs from the suspect’s body may take some time.
According to The Mirror report, General Fannie Masemola, the national commissioner of the South African Police Service, lauded the efforts of the authorities. The National Commissioner has appreciated them in their fight against criminal activities at OR Tambo International Airport. He stated that their men and women in blue are hard at work intercepting hardened criminals. As per the National Commissioner, South Africa is not a playground for criminals and transnational organised crime. He said that they are squeezing the space for criminals and leaving nothing to chance.
This news has been in the headlines amidst the capture of more than £560,000 (Rs 6.27 crore) worth of drugs at the airport in the last two months. Last week, a man was apprehended with 450 grams of cocaine hidden inside headphones after travelling from Sao Paulo. He was about to catch a connecting flight to Nigeria. At that moment, a cleaner allegedly handed him the headphones at the airport and quickly left the scene, as per the police.
In another incident, a South African woman stopped at the same airport and was found carrying a consignment of narcotics.
