Online friendships can sometimes prove to be quite costly. A Bengaluru woman learned this lesson after losing over Rs 12 lakh. The woman reported to the cops that she met the suspect two years ago in January 2022. The lady also told the police that she and her online friend used to talk over the phone and text each other regularly. As time passed, the man started to visit her residence when her husband went to work. She also revealed to the investigating officers that the man forced her to be intimate with him despite her disagreement.

Eventually, the man borrowed a sum of Rs 5 lakh from the woman and demanded more from her. When she later told him that she did not have any money left, the man convinced her to give him three necklaces, six bangles and a pendant. All these ornaments combined amounted to Rs 7.2 lakh. When the woman asked for the borrowed money and jewellery, the man requested more time. A fortnight back, he visited the woman at her residence and even assaulted her. The man further demanded a sum of Rs 1 lakh. When she refused to give him more money, the man blackmailed her by saying that he would reveal their friendship to her husband. The Bengaluru woman then took help from her brother and filed a police case against the man.

As per a report from the Times of India, the police said that a 35-year-old woman from Bengaluru filed a complaint after she lost Rs 5 lakh in cash and over 7.2 lakhs in jewellery to a friend she met online. “We registered a case under IPC Sections 354 C (voyeurism), 384 (extortion) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property),” asserted an investigating officer as quoted by TOI.

This isn’t the first time when a Bengaluru woman lost a huge chunk of money. Back in January this year, a 25-year-old resident of Jalahalli made a desperate attempt to reunite with her former partner which caused her a financial loss amounting to Rs 8.2 lakh. The woman was tricked by an astrologer named Ahmed who assured her that he would perform black magic rituals on her ex-boyfriend and his parents for the huge sum.
