The 'Mi Drone' comes with a Sony 12.4-megapixel sensor that can capture video at up to 3,840 x 2,160 at 30 fps and can also take RAW photos, in addition to a removable battery which lasts for up to 27 minutes.

Chinese electronics firm Xiaomi has unveiled its "Mi Drone," the company's first foray into the drone market and its rival to DJI's Phantom series.

The gadget, a 360-degree, 4K camera-wielding quadcopter is priced at 2,999 yuan (approximately US$457), and is expected to create waves for drone maker DJI with its Phantom 3 4K, which retails for a suggested retail price of US$999, now available for $799.

Specifically, the "Mi Drone" comes with a Sony 12.4-megapixel sensor that can capture video at up to 3,840 x 2,160 at 30 fps and can also take RAW photos, in addition to a removable battery which lasts for up to 27 minutes.

The controller, suited to beginners, comes with a dedicated button for takeoff and landing, with an added switch for returning the drone home, which it will also do automatically when its battery is running low or when it loses contact with the controller, notes Engadget.

The drone is launching on Xiaomi's Chinese crowdfunding site and is set to be in open beta this summer.
