The era of Windows 7 seems to be coming to an end. According to web analytics firm Net Applications, Windows 10 has finally overtaken Windows 7 as it recorded 39.22 percent of web traffic in December 2018. Windows 7 had fallen to 36.9 percent, while Windows 8.1 is currently at 4.41 percent and Windows XP, which was one of the most versions of the OS stands at 4.45 percent of the market share. Windows 8 and Vista recorded 1.3 percent and 0.45 percent respectively. This comes at a time when the Windows 7 official support will end this year.
Launched back in 2015, Windows 10 has seen a steady growth after Microsoft faced a lot of backlash from Windows 8 and 8.1 users. This is also the reason why Windows 7 is still quite popular. The decision of moving back to a desktop-oriented environment with Windows 10 helped Microsoft to bounce back in the game, while the support for universal apps, an expansion of the Metro-style apps introduced in Windows 8, is still one of its highlight features.
Windows currently has a total market share of 86.2 percent if you combine all the versions. This is a slight drop considering it had a market share of 87.79 percent at the beginning of the year. Apple’s MacOS reported a market share of 9.95 percent in January 2018 jumping to 10.65 percent in December. The tailenders were Linux at 2.09 percent and ChromeOS with 0.31 percent.
Unlike Net Applications, StatCounter gives an overview of the market share by relying on page hits. It suggests that Windows 10 overtook Windows 7 back in January 2018 reporting 42.78 percent usage share as opposed to at 41.86 percent. It also claims that in India, Windows 7 is still leading as of December 2018, with a 48.67 percent usage share followed by Windows 10 at 38.85 percent. This doesn’t come as a surprise as most enterprises and organisations are still stuck on the ageing operating system.
