OnePlus is offering refunds for its faulty USB Type-C cables, adapters
Users in India can take the cable or adapter they wish to return to the nearest OnePlus repair centre, and they will be refunded upon returning the items.

New Delhi: OnePlus has acknowledged that there are some defects in its USB Type-C cable and the Type-C adapter, and they could cause damage to the power source. According to the company, the two products are using a resistor that may not be fully compatible with some third-party devices.

"Our cable and adapter use a 10k ohm resistor, but according to version 1.1 of the Type-C port standard, these products should be using a 56k ohm resistor. The issue is that the cable and adapter are designed for a maximum of 2 amps of power, but the resistor will allow fast-charging devices to try to draw more power than a power source may allow. This could result in damage to the power source (third-party charger, USB port, etc.) if the device and power source do not have an internal mechanism to self-regulate the amount of power flowing to or from them," explains OnePlus in a blog post.

The table below can help you understand the issue and its consequences:

Given that the products are faulty, the company is offering users an opportunity to apply for a refund on units purchased through the OnePlus website.

Users in India and China can take the cable or adapter they wish to return to the nearest OnePlus repair centre, and they will be refunded upon returning the items. The company is providing this service up until December 31.

People in North America and Europe, however, can apply for the refund online, and they will be refunded directly through PayPal.

Chinese manufacturer further clears that the cable and adapter are safe to use with the OnePlus 2. That means that if users are charging or transferring data to or from the OnePlus 2, they should have no problems using the cable that shipped with their phone or the cables or adapters they bought separately.

Therefore, cables that were included in the box with the OnePlus 2 are not eligible for a refund.

The company, in the meantime, is working on developing improved Type-C cables and adapters with 56k ohm resistors.
