Apple Expected to Release AirPods With Wireless Charging Case in 2019
A major overhaul to the AirPods' design is supposed to be coming in late 2020.

Apple will release upgraded AirPods with "wireless charging support" in the first quarter of 2019, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has forecast in a note seen by tech website AppleInsider. The report also suggests that the truly wireless earphones will be completely redesigned in another update in 2020. However, it is unclear at this point if there is going to be an update only for the charging case that is compatible with the current-gen AirPods, or if there will be entirely new earbuds to look forward to.

Kuo also said that the next AirPods model will come with upgraded Bluetooth specs. While he did not provide more details on the Bluetooth application, we know from last month’s reports that the AirPods 2 received its Bluetooth 5.0 certification from the Bluetooth Special interest Group. Kuo doesn't specify what exactly the all-new design might involve, but there are only so many shapes that work for a pair of earphones. One of the big upgrades previously rumored for the next-generation AirPods 2 is "Hey Siri" integration – so you'll be able to access Apple's digital assistant without needing your iPhone.

Additionally, a major overhaul to the AirPods' design is supposed to be coming in late 2020. The note adds that the product will also offer a new user experience and incorporate a deep level of integration with iOS and Mac devices. With demand for Apple’s AirPods showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, Kuo believes that Apple in 2019 may sell upwards of 55 million units and as many as 110 million units in 2021 on account of the aforementioned brand new design.
