Upendra also received accolades for his portrayal of the character Freddy Patil in Animal. This happened even though the screen time of the character was less. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, Upendra talked about his character. He said that when he got a call from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s assistant director, he was reluctant to do a single scene. The AD, however, said that Sandeep wanted to meet Upendra and narrate the scene to him. “And when I went to meet him, the way he narrated the scene to me, I didn’t even think of saying no”, Upendra added.

Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal emerged as one of the major box-office successes with a massive collection of Rs 917.31 crore globally. Despite the global success, the film received scathing criticism for its misogynistic undertones. Critics and many viewers pointed out that the film’s dialogues and characters justify sexism and violence against women.

Besides these films, Upendra has done some commendable performances in the films Chandni Bar (Goludas Pandey), Page 3 (Inspector Arun Bhosle), Traffic Signal (Manya Landa), etc. Little do people know that Upendra, however, wanted to be a cricketer. He told IANS about it. He said, “I wanted to be a cricketer but my parents didn’t allow me to pursue that and they wanted me to make a career in kabaddi. Later, I realised that the financial problem in my family was the real hurdle because of which my father said no to me chasing cricket as a career option.”
