Varun has tarnished Gandhi surname: Singhvi
The Cong leader said the Mahatma will turn over in grave if he heard Varun.

New Delhi: Speaking in reaction to a statement by BJP leader Varun Gandhi, who on Sunday said that he should be known by his work rather than his Gandhi tag, Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that Varun has tarnished the Gandhi surname.

“It stands in stark contrast to the actions, words and thought process of the real Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand, who would turn over in his grave if he heard Varun Gandhi comparing himself to the great Mahatma,” Singhvi said.

“Varun should try to at least reform himself from now on instead of making self-serving and false statements. He should start doing some real Gandhigiri. His speech in Pilibhit is the exact opposite of Gandhigiri,” he added.

Varun had said, “People ask me that I am from the Gandhi family and so how do I feel. I tell everyone that I want to be known by my work, not by my name. I want to be seen as 'Gandhi by work', not 'Gandhi by name'.”

Varun was addressing an election meeting at Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh. He is contesting Lok Sabha election on a BJP ticket from the Pilibhit constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

The 29-year-old BJP leader had run into a controversy after he allegedly delivered a hate speech against Muslims during a public meeting in Pilibhit on March 7.

He was later arrested after being booked under the NSA.

On April 16, he was released on a parole by an order from the Supreme Court which imposed a condition that he will not make any speech against a community, religion, race and disturb public order during the period of parole.
