SP demands CBI probe into UP engineer's killing
SP also wants a probe into the "business of fund collection" by BSP.

New Delhi: Notwithstanding the rejection by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Samajwadi Party on Friday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the killing of an engineer allegedly by a Bhaujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA.

The party also demanded a judicial probe into the "business of fund collection" by Mayawati.

The SP Parliamentary Board which met in new Delhi on Friday, adopted a resolution seeking CBI probe into the killing of PWD engineer Manoj Kumar Gupta, allegedly by ruling BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari for reportedly failing to pay money for Mayawati's birthday.

"We will meet the Prime Minister in this regard...if need arises the SP parliamentary board will meet the President. If nothing works out, I will personally move the court," SP General Secretary Amar Singh said.

The parliamentary board in a resolution demanded a judicial probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the "business of fund collection" by BSP MLAs and ministers in Uttar Pradesh.

To a question on whether SP MLAs in UP will resign in protest, SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav said "there was no point in resigning, as those without moral values would not be affected by our resignation."

Yadav said CBI probe was essential as any agency under the state government will not be able to carry out an impartial probe as Mayawati has already made a statement giving a clean chit to the accused MLA.

"Who will dare to go against the statement of the CM?" Yadav asked.

Mulayam Singh claimed that the BSP MLA had demanded Rs 50 lakh from Gupta against the "set target" of Rs 2 lakh. "Gupta had paid Rs 2 lakh under pressure and refused to pay the rest of the amount...BSP workers are making money for themselves in the garb of fund collection for the CM," he alleged.

He claimed that 23 BSP ministers and MPs had criminal records and "the Chief Minister's residence at Kalidas Marg in Lucknow has become a goonda recruitment centre."

The SP president also said that "UP has now become the most criminalised state of the country....from a state with a glorious past, it has become a notorious state."

Amar Singh criticised Mayawati for announcing a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the slain engineer.

"While she spends crores of rupees on her birthday cake, she is paying such a paltry sum to the family, whose sole bread-earner has died," he said.

He said that he along with SP chief Mulayam Singh would visit Auraiya (where the incident took place) and Lakhimpur Kheri (native place of the slain engineer) on December 28 to hand over Rs 10 lakh to the victim's family.

"We are a poor party with no state funds...it is not a compensation but a gesture of our support," he said.
