Guwahati: Taking a jibe at Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said that the Opposition is making mockery of the people by saying that all the work done in the past 70 years will be done in three months if BJP comes to power.
"What has been done in 70 years, BJP claims it can do in it in three months. This is a mockery of the people as what has happened in the last seven decades is because of the people. Mahatma Gandhi taught us that revolution is brought with peace" Rahul said at a public rally in Khanapara in Guwahati.
"Congress in the last 10 years has brought 15 crore people above the poverty line. This is not a small work. We now want to work for the 70 crore people above the BPL line and below the middle class, the people who run this country. Leaders /politicians do not change the world, it is the people who change the world," he further added.
Rahul was repeating in a same way like Modi replied to his comment when the Congress Vice President was in Gujarat recently.
Accusing BJP of communal politics, Rahul said they talk of Hindutve and has no knowledge about the teaching of the sacred book. "BJP talks of Hindutva but did not read Gita. The Gita talks of respecting all, working with love and not to be arrogant. The same has been said in Quran, Gurugranth Sahib and Bible as well.
Rahul, who earlier remained silent on Modi, has started taking on the Gujarat Chief Minister in a run up to the Lok Sabha elections.
He also highlighted the Nido Taniam's issue, saying that strong law should be made against such attack. "I did not like what happened with him and there should be a strong law against this," said Taniam
Pitching for women reservation in Parliament, Rahul said that there should be 50 per cent women in the Lok Sabha and 50 per cent in the Rajya Sabha.
He also said that he was not in favour of family members of politicians getting party tickets to contest polls, adding he had already started the process in this direction.
"I want people to be a part of the process of selecting candidates and want the public to select their own candidates," he said.
He has initiated an experiment of choosing Congress candidates for Lok Sabha polls through the "primary" system wherein party workers nominate candidates for an election by short-listing them through an internal vote.
Guwahati constituency is among the constituencies selected as a part of this experiment for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.####
