New Delhi: The People’s Democratic Party has promised to vote for the Congress-led UPA Government on the Indo-US nuclear deal and the Shiromani Akali Dal may back it too.
The PDP, which has one Lok Sabha MP, played a key role in bringing down the Congress government in Kashmir but on Monday said it would support the Central government if it sought a trust vote in the Lok Sabha on the Indo-US nuclear deal.
"We are with the secular front (UPA). We will not do anything that will bring communal forces to the fore. We will vote for the UPA," PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti told PTI.
Mehbooda, the lone PDP member in the Lok Sabha, said the nuclear deal was in the interest of the country. Asked whether Muslims were opposing the deal, she said they were against policies of the US.
"But, this does not prevent millions of Muslims from visiting America or the Muslim nations from doing business with that country," she said.
The Shiromani Akali Dal, which has eight Lok Sabha MPs and governs Punjab, said it would meet on July 14 to decide on supporting the UPA Government. H S Bains, media advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, said the party favours any deal that is in national interest.
Bains’s remark is significant as SAD is part of the Opposition NDA and contested the Punjab Assembly elections along with the BJP.
