Mumbai: Social activist Medha Patkar, who was on a fast for nine days against demolition of a slum in Mumbai, called off her fast late Friday night after Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan assured her that an inquiry into the demolition would be completed within eight days.
"Ended the fast after a meaningful resolution of issues following meetings with Secretary Housing & CM. Thanks everyone for support. Zindabaad!" Patkar tweeted on Saturday morning.
She was fasting since April 4 after 43 houses in Ganesh Krupa Housing Society in Mumbai's Golibar slum area were demolished. Patkar had claimed that the slum residents were promised they won't be evicted and their homes won't be demolished till an inquiry in the case was complete.
Meanwhile, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Maharashtra Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police to reply within two weeks on the demolition.
